Medical/Surgical Nursing

Covering a wide variety of specialty units, medical/surgical nurses at OSU Medical Center stay on the leading edge of the increasingly complex delivery of care to patients transitioning from acute illness to recovery and eventually full heath.

As critical members of multidisciplinary patient care teams, nurses utilize multiple skill sets in caring for patients with wide-ranging cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, neurologic and multisystem pathologies.  Nurses perform or assist with procedures such as:

  • Central line placement
  • Complex wound irrigation and dressing changes
  • Chest tube placement
  • Ostomy education/care

Because of the wide-ranging medical/surgical treatment areas ranging from chronic diseases associated with diabetes and renal diseases to transplant surgery, general telemetry and inpatient forensic care, you have a chance to develop a niche area of expertise or acquire broad-based experience in a variety of areas.
