Respiratory Services

Respiratory therapists play a vital role in patient care at OSU Medical Center, providing treatment to patients ranging from premature newborns to geriatrics. Because of OSU Medical Center’s diverse healthcare environments and broad-based patient community, you have the opportunity to concentrate your skills in the venue that best suits your interests and abilities.

The OSU Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital offers opportunities for respiratory therapists to work with critically ill patients and expand skill sets in a cardiac care setting. In addition, the rest of the Medical Center also continues to keep pace with leading-edge technology. Respiratory therapists work with state-of-the-art respiratory therapy data information systems and the most technologically advanced ventilator systems.  Each Intensive Care Unit is equipped with blood gas labs, so results are analyzed quickly and efficiently.

The challenge of a career in respiratory therapy involves more than patient care at OSU Medical Center. Respiratory therapists here actively participate in research studies that lead to new developments and protocols. “Therapist-driven protocols” are the norm here, allowing more autonomy to assess and recommend treatments to even the most critically ill patients. In addition, our therapists provide nitric oxide therapy and are involved in A-line placements.

From treating premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed, to working with patients suffering from cardiopulmonary and heart disease, respiratory therapists enjoy the opportunity to master their skills and grow in their careers through challenging, engaging work.
