Dr. Mazzaferri earned his MD and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine followed by a fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Florida. He then returned to Ohio State to complete a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology. He is double boarded in Cardiovascular Diseases and Interventional Cardiology. He joined our faculty in 2006 as clinical assistant professor and rose through the ranks to become clinical associate professor in 2013 and clinical professor in 2018. In 2012, he became medical director of the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital, a position he continues to hold today. He also holds the Charles A. Bush MD Professorship in Cardiovascular Medicine.

Dr. Whitson earned his MD at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his PhD, residency training in Surgery and fellowship training in Surgical Infectious Disease and Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where he was the Richard L. Varco Surgical Research Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Thoracic Oncology. He is double boarded in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. In 2012, he joined the faculty at Ohio State as assistant professor of Cardiac Surgery, rising to become associate professor in 2016 and professor in 2019. Dr. Whitson is fellowship director of Thoracic Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support and vice chair of Innovation and Translational Research for the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Hund is the William D. and Jacquelyn L. Wells Chair at DHLRI and a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine (in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine). He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering, and most recently served as interim director at DHLRI.

Dr. Hund has expertise in heart failure and arrhythmia with techniques ranging from mathematical modeling and computational biology, molecular and cell biology, imaging, and animal physiology. In addition to his research achievements, Dr. Hund has been recognized for his dedication to promoting undergraduate and graduate education in medicine and biomedical engineering through curriculum development, didactic teaching and mentoring. He is a fierce advocate for interdisciplinary research at Ohio State, and has more than 100 publications in leading journals. He serves on multiple national editorial boards, holds several NIH awards and has served on national review panels.

Before joining Ohio State in July 2011, Dr. Hund was an assistant professor of Internal Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa. He earned his MS and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
