Development Profile: Bowling Gift to Benefit Cancer and Neuropathy Research

Tweedy Bowling has led an inspired and inspiring life. Her financial planner, Larry Waller of Waller Financial Planning Group, has seen first hand the many manifestations of that over the years. That is why, when Tweedy planned her estate gifts, she and Larry partnered to create ways for her to pass along her values, not just her valuables. Tweedy has entrusted her gifts to The Ohio State University Medical Center so that others may enjoy an enriched, fulfilled life.

When the planning process started with her attorney Jeff Cecil of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP, Tweedy had two goals: provide for her daughter’s financial security and sponsor health-related causes. Through a charitable remainder trust, Tweedy is able to accomplish both. The result is a $1.5- million gift to be divided between Ohio State’s Medical Center and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.

The charitable remainder trust will provide for Tweedy’s daughter. Then, the remaining principal will pass to The Tweedy Bowling Memorial Neuropathy Research Fund and The Tweedy Bowling Memorial Cancer Research Fund, to which others may also donate in the future.

“I have neuropathy, and it’s invading my body more every day,” Tweedy says. “I want to encourage more research, so when Larry suggested the legacy gift, I readily agreed.” The substantial progress Ohio State has already made in this field will be significantly enhanced by her philanthropy.

Tweedy has known too many loved ones with cancer, including Larry’s wife, Linda. “I have lost many friends to cancer, and Linda has especially inspired me,” states Tweedy. “After working with Larry, I realized I could use my resources to advance research toward a cure that will come sooner rather than later for so many like her.”

Because of these personal experiences, Tweedy intentionally seeks out those who are dedicated to making healthy lives possible for others. According to Larry, “She ultimately chose Ohio State’s Medical Center because she knows they can be trusted to invest prudently, spend wisely and be leaders in finding cures. We knew they represent the highest integrity in these health-related causes.

“Just as we find appropriate financial investments for a client’s lifestyle, we also look for well-structured organizations to be stewards of the ‘values’ investment of their legacy,” Larry adds, “and Ohio State is just such an institution.”

Noble purpose and reaching out to others have been the themes of Tweedy Bowling’s life. Through purposeful, thoughtful planning, she and her financial adviser have partnered with Ohio State so those themes and values inspire others to the same high calling.
