ROSS HEART HOSPITAL HONORED FOR CRITICAL CARE EXCELLENCE

The Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Unit at Ohio State University’s Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital has received the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence for the second consecutive year. The award is sponsored by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and recognizes units that achieve the highest quality outcomes and provide exceptional care to patients and their families. Critical care units considered for the award are evaluated based on recruitment and retention, education and mentoring of new nurses, evidence-based research and practice, patient outcomes, and leadership ethics. MELVIN NAMED VICE CHAIR OF DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

Dr. W. Scott Melvin (43221) has been appointed executive vice chair of The Ohio State University Medical Center’s Department of Surgery. He also directs the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery and the department’s fellowship program. Melvin will be responsible for the promotion and tenure process, mentoring faculty and various administrative functions. Melvin earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio and completed his residency at the University of Maryland. Upon his recruitment to OSU Medical Center, Melvin established the fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and the multidisciplinary Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (CMIS). Under Dr. Melvin’s direction, the CMIS has conducted hundreds of postgraduate courses, trains general surgery residents in laparoscopic skills, and maintains a robust research program, receiving millions of dollars in continuous funding over the past decade. He has received numerous teaching awards including the OSU College of Medicine Distinguished Educator Award in 2010.
