Columbus, OHIO – Dr. Clay Marsh (43221), a world-renowned scientist and educator at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, has been appointed Chief Innovation Officer for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he directs the IDEA Studio in Healthcare and Design. In addition, Marsh will continue in the Ohio State College of Medicine as Vice Dean for Innovation.
The IDEA Studio in Healthcare and Design was created to accelerate discovery, innovation and commercialization in health care through novel solutions developed to improve health, provide value and help to deliver P4 Health to Ohio State communities.
Through the convergence of technology development and design thinking, the IDEA Studio will focus on identifying important gaps or critical problems needing addressed and create technologies and solutions to solve these vexing problems. In addition, applying design thinking, focusing on human interactions with these solutions will provide exceptional healthcare experiences for patients and families. The Studio will work closely with Ohio State’s Technology Commercialization Office and the University Health and Wellness Initiative to expedite success of the University’s commercialization efforts and to build an ecosystem that makes healthy living easy, affordable and accessible.
“The IDEA Studio will enhance our ability to bring the best external partners together with the talent and expertise of the Medical Center and University to change health care as we move from the clinic to the home,” says Marsh.
“It is our mission at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center to improve people’s lives through innovation in research, education and patient care, and the creation of the Studio will enable us to realize our mission more rapidly.”
Under Marsh’s executive leadership, Ohio State’s Center for Personalized Health Care is earning international distinction through its leadership in a novel approach to personalized health care known as P4 Health – predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory medicine. P4 Health focuses on creating systems to deliver health care focused on bringing the right intervention or treatment to the right person at the right time to save money and improve outcomes.
With Marsh at the helm, Ohio State collaborates with outstanding research centers like the Institute for Systems Biology, of the P4 Medicine Institute, a Seattle based non-profit innovation consortium led by Dr. Leroy Hood, a physician-scientist and recipient of the National Medal of Science in 2013, to create P4 Medicine at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. In addition, Ohio State recently partnered with Allostatix and co-founded P44U, a data analytic company focusing on creating algorithms to predict diseases to precisely intervene to prevent them from occurring.
Marsh, also director of the Center for Critical Care and Respiratory Medicine at the Medical Center, helped elevate the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine to a position of national prominence as its former director.
Marsh has won numerous teaching awards and has been recognized nationally for his research and devotion to teaching and mentorship of medical students, residents and fellows. He has been an invited speaker at various national conferences, has published more than 130 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and holds six U.S. patent applications and 10 international patent applications.
