Sports Medicine 

The Philosophy

Sports Medicine promotes and integrates scientific research, education and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance physical performance, fitness, health and quality of life. Sports Medicine providers apply their knowledge, training and dedication in sports medicine and exercise science to promote healthier lifestyles for people. We look for and find better methods to allow individuals to live longer and more productive lives.

The Art

Working in a wide range of medical specialties, allied health professions and scientific disciplines, our members are committed to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sports-related injuries and the advancement of the science of exercise.

Training and Certification

  • Successful graduation with a BS or BA degree from an accredited college or university
  • Successful completion of the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
  • Graduation from an Accredited 4-year Medical School with the degree of MD, or DO
  • National Board of Medical Examiners License Exam (for State Medical License)
    Graduation from an Approved 3-year Family Practice Residency
  • Board Certification Family Practice (DABFP): National ABFP Board Examination (required every 7 years), maintenance of State  Medical Licensure and CME.
  • Board Certification in Sports Medicine (CAQSM): Requires maintenance of ABFP
  • Board Certification, maintenance of State Medical  Licensure, successful completion of Board Examination in Sports Medicine (every 10  years), and CME.
