Statistics of Stroke

More about stroke/brain attack:

Consider the following statistics regarding strokes, published by the American Heart Association:

  • When ranked separately from other cardiovascular diseases, stroke is the third leading cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer.

  • Strokes kill more than 160,000 Americans each year.

  • On average, every 53 seconds, someone in the US experiences a stroke. Every 3.1 minutes someone dies of one.

  • About 33 percent of people who have had a stroke and survived will have another stroke within five years.

  • The risk of having a stroke increases with age. In fact, for people over age 55, the incidence of stroke more than doubles in each successive decade.

  • Seventy-two percent of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.

  • Of all the stroke deaths that occur each year, women account for approximately 61.5 percent.

  • African-Americans are twice as likely to experience a stroke than Caucasian-Americans.
