Blood and Marrow Transplant Program

The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Ohio State's Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at has earned international recognition for advancements in treating cancer.

As part of a Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Comprehensive Transplant Program, the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program is able to offer many of the latest treatment options and participates in several National Cancer Institute clinical trials.

Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) is a treatment option for a variety of hematologic diseases, hematologic malignancies and select solid tumors. Transplantation is done by first giving high dose chemotherapy with or without total body irradiation, followed by stem cell infusion. The stem cell infusion is called “transplantation.”

Transplants performed at the OSU Medical Center may be autologous (a patient’s own stem cells) or allogeneic (from a matched donor).

The stem cell used for transplantation originates from the bone marrow. Stem cells are responsible for producing all of the blood cells. Sources for stem cell collection include the bone marrow, peripheral blood and less commonly the umbilical cord.

The BMT program also developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of a radiation-free preparative regimen for blood and marrow transplantation that is used throughout the world for treating diseases such as chronic myelogenous leukemia.

BMT Program accreditations:
· Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT)
· American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).
· College of American Pathologists (CAP)
· Clinical Laboratories Improvement Amendment (CLIA)

The BMT Program is also associated with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), which is the hub of a worldwide Network of more than 500 leading medical facilities in marrow and blood cell transplantation.
