As with all abdominal operations, there are risks with the surgical treatment of obesity. Possible complications specific to the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass include:
- Leakage through the staples or sutures which hold the stomach and intestines together (occurs in less than two out of 100 patients)
- Injury to the spleen during surgery (occurs in one out of 100 patients)
- Ulcers forming in the stomach or small intestine (occurs in less than two out of 100 patients)
- Obstruction of the stomach opening
- Esophageal widening or dilation, which lessens the sensation of feeling "full"
- Vitamin and/or iron deficiency
- Problems adjusting to a new body image
You will be able to discuss these risks and others when you meet with your surgeon.
