Map & Directions

As The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center focuses on advancing personalized health care, the 10-story, 403,000-square-foot Biomedical Research Tower (BRT) is key to enabling discoveries of innovative, personalized treatments for the benefit of our patients and others around the world.

The BRT furthers OSU’s internationally-recognized research programs in cancer and cancer genetics, cardiovascular and lung disease and high-field imaging, as well as brings to national and international prominence OSU’s biology, biotechnology and biomedical informatics programs. It expands programs in important emerging fields, such as neurological disorders, heart failure and heart imaging, pharmacogenetics and targeted molecular therapies, microbial pathogenesis and biodefense, and tissue engineering.

Housing more than 180,000 square feet of lab space, the BRT opened in November 2006. It is the largest research facility on the OSU campus, nearly doubling the amount of biomedical research space on campus.

Projections on the economic impact of the Biomedical Research Tower indicate it will generate an estimated $3.7 billion in economic impact and 17,000 new jobs during its first 10 years of operation. Research conducted in the building is expected to attract significant extramural financial support and generate patent and licensing opportunities. The $160 million facility was funded without state or Ohio State University monies.

Key features of the tower include:

  • Research laboratories dedicated to experimental therapeutics (cancer), heart and lung disease, neurobiology of disease, imaging, microbial pathogenesis, pharmacogenomics, bioinformatics, diabetes, structural biology and tissue engineering.
  • Core labs for shared use in genomics, cytogenetics, proteomics, mass spectrometry, BSL-3/viral vector, flow cytometry, histology, tissue engineering, X-ray crystallography, cryogen storage and light and electron microscopy.
  • Faculty and administrative offices for 800 employees, including 122 faculty and their teams.
  • A 200-seat auditorium, plus four seminar rooms and a café.
  • A bridge connector to the OSU Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute and an underground tunnel connector to the OSU Tzagournis Research Facility.
