The department of Cardiovascular Medicine is seeking perimenopausal women to participate in a study of monthly iron loss and its possible role in women’s risk of cardiovascular disease. Participants must meet the following criteria:
• ≥ 40 years old
• Between 1 and 6 menstrual cycles in the last 12 months
• No known heart or vascular disease
• Must have at least 2 of the following risk factors:
-high blood pressure (treated or untreated)
-diabetes
-high cholesterol (treated or untreated)
-smoking
The study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health involves an MRI scan without contrast of the carotid arteries and blood work once per year for 3 years.
