OSU Medical Center Expanding Outpatient Programs
Posted 9/19/2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Continued growth is leading Ohio State University Medical Center to a five-story building west of the medical campus, which will become the new home for several outpatient practices next year. The lease/purchase agreement for the building at 915 Olentangy River Road, at the entrance to the 315 Research and Technology corridor, was approved today (9/19) by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees.
Located just north of Goodale Boulevard, the newly constructed building will house a center for women’s health; clinical programs for plastic surgery, otolaryngology, and ophthalmology; and a suite of six operating rooms for ambulatory surgical procedures.
More than 300 staff members will be located at the facility, which also will have a small number of academic offices and laboratories. Ohio State is the building’s sole tenant.
Peter Geier, CEO of OSU Health System, said the Medical Center continues to grow as some of the top physicians and scientists from around the world are recruited to Ohio State. “Patients have been taking notice of the high quality care they receive at Ohio State and we’ve been preparing for this demand for additional outpatient services,” said Geier.
“The Olentangy River Road site gives us everything our patients need in the way of space, easy access from any direction and proximity to the OSU Medical Center campus,” he added.
Dr. E. Christopher Ellison, chair of Ohio State University Physicians, which represents the more than 700 physicians affiliated with The Ohio State University Medical Center, said the practices being located at Olentangy River Road will draw patients from throughout Ohio.
“These practices are seeing heavy utilization and relocating them to a new and very accessible location next to the medical center campus makes sense for the convenience of patients and efficient utilization of staff resources,” said Ellison. “There is considerable excitement among staff about moving services to this state-of-the-art location.”
The 137,000-square-foot structure, with a glass and brick facade, is currently being completed and will house programs as early as summer 2009.
The programs will be moving into the building at about the same time construction ramps up on a massive medical center expansion project that will position Ohio State to become a top-20 academic medical center through advancements in research, education and patient care. The project, the largest in the university’s history and estimated to cost more than $1 billion, is expected to be completed by 2016.
