The James To Host Session For Carriers Of BRCA Mutations

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute will host the first “Beyond Risk” conference from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 18 at the Biomedical Research Tower, 460 W. 12th Ave.
The free conference is open to those who have undergone genetic testing that revealed they have certain gene mutations that may increase their risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer.
Conference participants will learn about BRCA mutations, including the importance of early cancer detection and cancer risk-reduction. The event also will encourage open discussions in small group settings where women can share their experiences and listen to the experiences of others.
The conference will feature:
- Dr. Michael Blumenfeld, director, division of general obstetrics and gynecology at the Ohio State University Medical Center, discussing ovarian cancer risk-reducing options.
- Dr. Dimitrios Spigos, who specializes in radiology at The James, discussing advances in breast cancer screening.
- Social workers and psychotherapists facilitating peer-to-peer discussion groups and discussing stress management.
