Ohio State Leukemia Specialist Receives NCI Award

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dr. John Byrd (43212), a nationally renowned leukemia specialist and researcher at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, has received the Michaele C. Christian Oncology Development Lectureship and Award for 2009.
The lectureship and award, established in 2007 by the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program, recognizes the contributions of mid-career scientists involved in the development of cancer therapy agents.
Byrd received his award at the annual fall Cancer Therapy Evolution Program’s Early Drug Development Meeting, where he also presented an invited lecture on pre-clinical and clinical development of cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors.
As the associate director for Translational Research at Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, Byrd has been working to accelerate translational cancer research throughout the OSU cancer program. He is credited for playing a sentinel role in the development of several therapeutic agents in the treatment of leukemia, including rituximab, alemtuzumab and flavopiridol that led him to being selected for this award.

The OSUCCC-James is one of only five centers in the country approved by the NCI to conduct both Phase I and Phase II clinical trials.
