Inpatient Rehabilitation

For many patients recovering from trauma, stroke, extended illness, injury or disease, when the period of most intensive hospital care is finished, there’s often a need to re-learn or regain abilities lost in the event or because of extended time in bed.

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is home to one of the highest ranked inpatient rehabilitation centers in the United States, the Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital, located on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus.

At Dodd, certified physical medicine physicians, as well as specially trained physical, occupational and speech therapists, help patients regain as much ability and independence as possible in mobility, speech and daily living skills through exercise, assistive devices and technologies and simulated work and living environments.

Rehabilitation services at Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital include a 60-bed inpatient center, as well as numerous outpatient locations throughout Columbus. Dodd is one of only five hospitals in the United States chosen to participate in the NeuroRecovery Network developed by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. A referral from a health care provider is required to access these services.

Skilled Nursing

When it comes time for you to leave the hospital, your care team may recommend that before you return home you spend some time at a skilled nursing facility or nursing home. The benefits of this level of care are 24/7 medical monitoring, meals, housekeeping and on-site rehabilitation services, which give you more time to focus on your rest and recovery.

There are hundreds of providers of skilled nursing services available throughout Ohio, offering a wide range of amenities at various costs. If you request transfer to a specific facility, we’ll honor that selection and our discharge coordinator will work with them to ensure your smooth transfer and transport to them.

If you don’t have a preferred provider, we can help you find one that offers the services you need, the location and amenities you desire and one that’s covered by your health insurance. We can also share details on dozens of facilities across Ohio that are members of our Quality Provider Network. A referral from a physician or other health care provider is required to receive these services.

Long-Term Acute Care

For patients who need more time to recover from catastrophic critical illness and prepare for their next care level or transition home, the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center offers a long-term acute care center at Ohio State East Hospital in Columbus.

The interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and therapists who work on this unit specialize in helping critically ill patients breathe, speak, eat, walk and think as independently as possible. We develop individualized treatment plans, support progress, celebrate success and work together to restore each patient’s quality of life.

The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center’s long-term acute care services are operated by Select Specialty Hospital. A referral from a physician or other health care provider is required to receive these services.

Hospice

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has partnered with Hospice of Central Ohio to offer home-based or inpatient hospice care for patients who have a terminal prognosis and wish to have a meaningful end-of-life experience. The specifics of each patient’s circumstances will determine if inpatient or home-based care is the best choice for them.

For patients who need inpatient hospice care, a specially designed care center within Ohio State’s University Hospital offers a peaceful environment for patients and families. Patient rooms feature guest couches that convert to beds, charging stations and reclining chairs. Families of patients may stay or visit with their loved ones 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A health care provider referral is required and specific criteria must be met to access both in-home and inpatient hospice services.
