Congratulations to Ralph Spires, one of the unit clerical associates serving the University Hospital Emergency Department, for being nominated and selected as one of this quarter's BUCK-I Award winners!

The Bringing the Utmost Care and Kindness to Individual patients (BUCK-I) Award recognizes Health System ancillary nursing staff (non-RNs who report to a nurse manager) for extraordinary acts of compassionate care they demonstrate in their work with patients. Winners of this award are known for exemplifying the mission, vision and values of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and truly making a connection with the patient and family through trust and emotional support, often going above and beyond the call of duty.

"One day, a patient called into the emergency department in distress due to a mental health crisis. The patient was driving to the medical center and called the emergency department, stating that she was having a "mental breakdown." It was obvious that she was very tearful and distraught. Ralph remained calm and talked to the patient for the remainder of her drive to the hospital and her walk in to the hospital. He encouraged her to remain calm, instructed her on how to get to the parking garage and walked her step by step through pulling a parking ticket, parking her car and walking into the emergency department. He used encouraging language and calmly guided this patient through what could have been a dangerous situation. When the patient arrived and checked into the emergency department, Ralph went to check on her, once again going above and beyond."
